(I-AutoNewsWire.com, November 13, 2012 ) Chicago, IL -- Carmakers in Europe are assessing the effects of Hurricane Sandy on their North American operations. Ports in New Jersey and New York closed the Sunday before Sandy hit, and that could disrupt supplies to dealerships. European automakers – including Audi, BMW, Mini and Porsche – usually keep tight inventories. All four at the start of October had inventories to cover fewer than 40 days. It is unclear yet how the storm will affect supply, said BMW spokesman Tom Plucinsky. “We typically ship cars to dealers within days of them arriving at port,” he told Cars.com. “All our facilities have been closed for the last two days, so it’s too early to say what the effects of the storm are on our inventory.” The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey receives a steady stream of vehicles from Europe. In 2010, the organization’s ports handled 738,000 shipments, according to a study. And North America is a big target for European exports. About two-thirds of the continent’s auto sales were brought to North America from January to September this year, according to data from Automotive News. Because there was several days’ warning of Sandy, shipment changes could have lessened the storm’s impact on supplies. A Mini dealer in Chicago said shipping was completed before the storm. “There wasn’t much sitting at the port,” Steve McDonald said. Audi has received no reports of damage to vehicles, said spokesman John Schilling. The automaker ships vehicles to Davisville, RI. “Short term, we’ve seen disruptions from power outages and customers postponing delivers, as might be expected,” he said. “Longer term, we are still assessing what, if any, impact that Hurricane Sandy might have caused.” Volvo was still assessing conditions. “We’re not sure when normal shipping will resume back into Port Newark as the power is still out,” said Laura Venezia, a spokeswoman. Volvo also sends cars through Baltimore. American dealerships have been affected, too. Bob Shanks, Ford Co.’s chief financial officer, said most of the 800 dealerships in Sandy’s path managed to shelter their vehicles. But many of them were forced to close, he told Bloomberg TV.
