(I-AutoNewsWire.com, January 29, 2014 ) BATON ROUGE, LA According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m. Friday, January 24, 2014, police responded to 49 traffic accidents across Baton Rouge. The winter mix of precipitation was reportedly the main contributing factor in the unusual increase of car accidents in the area.
During a usual day, Baton Rouges Police Department spokesman LJean McKneely said police normally respond to less than 10 accidents within the same six-hour timeframe.
The majority of these accidents occurred on Interstate 112, Interstate 110, Interstate 10 and service roads prior to the Louisiana Department of Transportation closing portions of the interstate. Although many schools and offices were closed, there was great amounts of traffic congestion accumulating as the roads were closed.
The Louisiana Crash Data Reports indicates there were a total of 17 car accident injuries caused by sleet and hail in 2013, along with two total accident injuries caused by snow. While the average annual snowfall of Baton Rouge, LA is 0.08, we can assume that drivers are not prepared for these adverse driving conditions.
